Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a teenage girl Laila becomes Rasheed's second wife. When the Taliban take over Afghanistan, and Rasheed's tyranny at their home, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. But Mariam's and Laila's bond is strong and love can move a person to act in unexpected ways.

A thousand splendid suns is about cruelty, tyranny and violence. But it is also about beauty, love and hope. This book will make you both sad and angry. It made me cry for Afghan women and love Mariam and Laila.

Khalid Hosseini is a brilliant writer. His text is easy to read, sometimes almoust poetic. He has captured the feelings of two very different women perfectly in his book. I strongly recommend this modern literature classic for everyone.
